A facelift for Limassol

Work on Akti Olympion, the stretch of Limassol’s coast stretching from the old port to the edge of town will improve the beachfront in time for summer. The construction of the reclamation near the old port and the improvement of the old Akti Olympion have given Limassolians a seafront promenade to be truly proud of. Breakwaters (wave-breakers) were constructed to calm the waters and encourage the collection of sand on the beach, while a footpath and cycle path were created. The project to protect the beach from erosion and replace the sand that has been swept away, should be completed by early July, in time for the high season.

Progress of the new airport terminal

Good progress is being made on the new Larnaca Airport terminal, which is expected to be in full operation by November. The new terminal will have more than triple the passenger handling capacity of the current one. In its 1st phase of operation the new terminal would be able to handle 7.5 million passengers a year. Once the terminal is expanded, 2 years from now, Larnaca and Paphos airport would have the combined handling capacity for 12 million passengers per year. The airport operating company Hermes announced that from July the terminal would be carrying out dummy runs to ensure everything went according to plan in November.

Two new parks

Eco Park :

The old Kampia mine, in the foothills of Machairas, has been turned into a park. Located in a rolling expanse of land, dotted with evergreens and offering enchanting views, this stunning landscape forms a truly exotic location. All materials used to complete the project were taken from the environment. Everywhere natural stone and wood attract the eye, materials that are bound intimately and harmoniously with nature. Visitors can stroll along the natural footpaths, breath fresh air and participate in eco-farming. They can also follow all the stages of the traditional olive-oil making process and take part in its production. Beside eco-farming, animals and birds are raised in the park.

Eleouthkia park:

Folk tradition and botany combine at an innovative theme park which opened in Paphos recently. Situated in Amarita village, just minutes away from central Paphos and half an hour from Limassol, Eleouthkia park is Cyprus’ first venue to marry folk customs with specialist botany. Visitors to the new park will not only be able to visit a traditional village home, enjoy authentic Cypriot hospitality at a taverna, and sample and even help make local dishes; they will also be able to take expert guided tours of the park’s fascinating gardens. Covering an area of 20,000 sq.m, the park boasts more than 50,000 plants and flowers of 1800 varieties within 15 thematic gardens.
