Cyprus hosts 150,000 rounds of golf a year

Cyprus hosts between 90,000 to 150,000 rounds of golf a year in its three main golf courses, and about 60,000 of those games played are tourists. The golf courses attract high-income tourists who stay in 4- and 5-star hotels and spend much more than the average holidaymaker on the island. Golf tourism is also a boost to winter tourism and hotel occupancy rates, especially during the low season of October to April, as golfers, due to the harsh conditions in their home countries, prefer the weather in Cyprus for their game. Most of them come from the U.K., with smaller numbers from German-speaking countries (Germany, Austria and Switzerland), the Scandinavian countries and some from France and Holland. The three main golf courses of Minthis Hills (formerly Tsada), Secret Valley and Aphrodite Hills, were established in 1994, 1996 and 2002, respectively. There are three other non-commercial golf courses operated by local clubs, all of which are members of the Cyprus Golf Federation. The three are in the UNPA area within the UN-controlled Nicosia airport boundaries, Dhekelia in the Eastern SBA and Episkopi Happy Valley in the Western SBA.

Cyprus leaders making best progress since 1974

The talks that began last September between the Greek Cypriot leader and the Turkish Cypriot leader are continuing. The United Nations special envoy believes the leaders are making good progress in reunification talks as the international community expects an end results. He believes they have put more on paper now of an agreed nature than at any time since 1974. The two leaders have tackled thorny issues such as power sharing and property rights, but serious differences still remain. Discussions on EU-related matters have been concluded and the economic aspects of a solution are next on the agenda.

Inside Aeolos

Tourism is one of the most important sectors of Cyprus’ economy, employing 40.500 persons and generating €2.042 billion per year (or 21.76% of GDP). Nearly 80% of tourist arrivals and revenues come from countries of the European Union where environmental issues are a priority. Many Tour operators already select tourist structures for their catalogues based on environmental quality. If Cyprus wants to be a destination of choice, it needs to maintain a clean environment and improve its solid waste management practices, particularly within the hospitality and tourism industry. With this in mind Aeolos staff, together with other tourism providers, participated on Sunday May 10 in a cleaning campaign in Galata Village, Troodos. Besides helping prevent the threat that littering poses on the tourism industry, we enjoyed a fun day out, taking in beautiful nature, visiting interesting sights - amongst others picturesque Unesco churches - and……enjoyed good food and drink!

Tourism fall less steeply in April
Tourism arrivals fell over the year-earlier period less steeply in April than in February and March but the main reason could have been the timing of western Easter. On the basis of the results of the Passengers Survey, arrivals of tourists reached 181,395 in April 2009 compared with 182,091 in April 2008, recording a decrease of 0.4%. This was much milder than the fall of 18.1% recorded in March and 21.6% record in February. However, rather than signaling the end of the global economic crisis, it probably merely reflects the timing of western Easter, which was celebrated on April 12 in 2009 and March 23 in 2008. In 2009, therefore, it is likely that more people arrived in April than in March. This is mainly apparent in arrivals from Germany, which rose by 56.5% to 15,683, from 10,138 in April 2008. However, the market for the UK, the biggest market, was still weak, with a decrease of 9.9% to 84,526. There was also a fall of 15.6% to 8,259 in visitors from Sweden. Another disappointing outcome was from Russia, with arrivals down 11.8% over April 2008 to 9,455, the first time a fall has been recorded since January 2007. On the other hand, there was an increase of 23.7% to 15,708 in arrivals from Greece.
