Springtime in Cyprus
With the rains we had last winter and the weather warming up, this spring is providing wildflower enthusiasts and nature lovers of all kinds an outdoor experience they have not had in years. The heavy rainfall has resulted in a wealth of plant life, with many flower species blooming in greater abundance than they have in recent memory.
March and April are the best months to find wild flowers in Cyprus, and the flowering season will last longer this year than usual because of the rain. And with the increased beauty have already come an increased number of people out and about, hiking in forests and fields and enjoying the wild flowers.
Paphos archaeological sites set for upgrade

The Paphos Regional Board of Tourism is launching an initiative this year that will see it upgrade the presentation and promotion of the archeological riches across the district. It was agreed to improve the appearance of key sites as part of a wider framework of upgrading the local tourism product. Key facets of the project will include the labeling of the archeological remains in a uniform manner, building protective shelters and improving ‘infrastructure’ so that visitors can access more easily.

Prize for Cyprus coin

The Cyprus  Euro 2 coin has been awarded first prize, gaining the title ‘Best Trade Coin’ in international competition organized in 2009. The winning coin is the common Euro 2 circulation coin which depicts a cross shaped idol dating back to 3000BC. The idol is an example of Cyprus’ prehistoric art and civilization. In the judges’ view the coin possesses all-round appeal both from the aesthetic and commercial viewpoints and best meets the basic considerations of actual circulation as a monetary unit.

Government to look at legalizing gay marriage

The government will soon examine the issue of making same-sex marriages legal in Cyprus, Interior Ministry Permanent Secretary has told the Sunday Mail.
The move was prompted by a letter sent to the Interior Ministry by a man who lives permanently in Cyprus, asking for the law governing civil marriages to be amended to allow same-sex marriages. The meeting scheduled for next month appears to be a step forward.

The Venus Beach Hotel in Paphos has been renovated and reopened on the 20th of March 2010.

Renovations took place in many areas of the hotel including:

In a beautiful landmark in Lania, in the heart of the village, surrounded by an enchanting natural environment, you can find ‘Pleiades’; a showplace of Art with workshops, atelier, art shop, exhibition hall and café.

In the mosaic workshop works take place with natural pebbles, glass inlays, beads, ceramic and metallic elements, creating classic and modern mosaics. The classic pieces are either replications of the mosaics of Kourio and Pafos, or motives borrowed from vessels and statuettes that are located in the Cyprus Museum, or personal makings inspired by the history and culture of Cyprus.

A small café has been recently opened in an old house with interesting elements of the Cypriot architecture of the 19th century and it has been incorporated with the rest of ‘Pleiades’. Here the visitors can enjoy delicious deserts with a cup of coffee, or a hot plate of food with a glass of wine from the regional wineries.
For the visiting groups that can spare more time on the site after the lecture (at least 1 or 1 and a half hour) they can make, under guidance, small mosaic pieces which they can take with them. Art meetings and weekend classes for mosaic and painting are also organized.
