Pope’s visit a big success
The Pope 37-strong Papal delegation landed aboard an Alitalia flight at Paphos airport around 2pm June 4th, where he was met on the red carpet by President Demetris Christofias and his wife Elsi. The Pope was further greeted by Archbishop Chrysostomos and almost a thousand people lost in a sea of flags and banners. At the welcoming ceremony Pope Benedict blessed a small olive tree, which will be planted at Paphos Airport in remembrance of his visit. The day further entailed a moment of pilgrimage on the footstep of Saint Paul.
June 5th he visited the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, where the Pope met the Christofias family and exchanged gifts, before heading to the St Maron School, where around 2000 followers from around the world had gathered in anticipation of the historic visit. He then set off for lunch at the Archbishopric, where he was met by the Holy Synod, bar five dissenting bishops.
On his final day, the Pope visited the Eleftheria Sports Centre where mass was held for up to 20,000 people. He had lunch with Archbishop Chrysostomos and the Holy Synod members, and then departed for the Maronite Cathedral of Our Lady of Graces where he met with Maronite Archbishop Youssef Soueif.
At his farewell ceremony at Larnaca Airport, before boarding his plane back to the Vatican, in the presence of President Demetris Christofias and First Lady Elsi, Pope Benedict called for lasting peace in the Eastern Mediterranean
A valuable discovery in Protaras
A crew working on the construction of the second phase of the new beach walkway at Fig Tree Bay in Protaras, accidentally uncovered a tomb, containing important findings, including four untouched sarcophagi from the Roman and Hellenistic periods. Compared to other burial chambers found in the area, which were open and looted, the value of the grave is great since it was found intact during excavations. In roughly the same area where there are burial chambers from the same period, they were open and looted. This one is intact, which increases its archaeological value.
