Limassol
As the second largest city in Cyprus, Limassol certainly does not suffer from “middle child/city” syndrome. It very much has its own identity and culture and Limassolians are most proud of their city. It might be described as the most cosmopolitan of the cities in Cyprus as it has so many different nationalities living and working here. Perhaps the time that Limassol started gaining some notoriety in the world is when Richard the Lionheart married his fiancé Berengeria at the “Castle” en route to the Crusades. It was then sold and resold to the Knights Templar and then the Lusignans; in fact Limassol has a long and fascinating history of ownership, perhaps because of its strategic trading importance, evidence of which can be seen now in its impressive, bustling new port. But other than its trading significance, this city has long been renowned as a wine producing region; take a drive towards the Troodos Mountain Range and all you’ll see are vineyards. Visit the Erimi Wine Museum and spend some time at the beautifully maintained village of Lofou, where you will be encouraged to try “Zivania”, the locally made aperitif; it’s quite potent, so just make sure someone else is driving! The best time to savour the wine industry though is during the annual Limassol Wine Festival which is held every September. This is definitely a good time to walk or get a taxi. If you like walking then the promenade, which is right on the seafront and passes most of the hotels is the way to go. And if really like the outdoors, then you have to try the island’s only outdoor cinema. The Rio makes for a perfect place to take in a movie in the fresh outdoors while enjoying a beer and snack in the comfort of your own car. Limassol is also home to some of the best spa hotels in Cyprus. Le Meridien’s Spa wins international awards every year, while the Columbia Beach Resort, in the beautiful village of Pissouri is a treat in itself. Whether it’s imposing castles, stylish eateries or a lazy day at the beach, Limassol is the kind of place that will let you do as much, or as little, as you want.
