Nicosia For Singles
If it’s one thing the people in our capital like doing, it’s partying. They work hard, dress hard and then like to go to clubs and stand around wearing the well put together clothes so people can see them.
Although Limassol likes to think of itself as the all-round party centre of the island, it’s Nicosia with its very upmarket clubs and cocktail bars that quietly gets on with the business of looking and feeling good.
Your first stop has to be Finbarrs, which on the outside has the makings of a traditional Irish Bar, complete with the requisite green décor and Gaelic writing. But step inside and watch how the well heeled behave in a bar; order finger food and nibble delicately while sipping on your Irish Coffee. But the best thing about Finbarr’s has to be the parties, most notably St. Patrick’s Day and Halloween where everyone dresses up and dancing is a given.
No visit to Nicosia is complete with a visit to Plato’s, which is something of an iconic institution. You’ll have to go deep into the old town to find this laid back bar which often plays chilled out blues music. Don’t be put off by the quite rundown appearance of the outside, this place is definitely worth a visit or three if you’re in the mood for something laid back and relaxed.
Of course no stay in Nicosia is complete without spending a few evenings dancing the night away. There really are some awesome clubs with quite a few big name dj’s playing their sets quite often. As the city is the most Greek-intense with fewer expatriats and foreign nationals living here, the music in the clubs tends to be a mix of Greek and the latest English/ international hits. But don’t be put off, as the clubs are all very, very good; they have to be simply because the competition is so fierce.
Your first stop should be ClubD if you’re into dance music; but don’t expect fancy decoration - this is minimalism deluxe offset by the strictly dance, house and trance music it plays. If you want something a little different then try Club Red which often features live music; the place is set in a converted warehouse and plays a pretty much mixed set. Definitely the place if you like something a little different from the mainstream.
For the younger crowd, there’s one place which rules the club roost - Traffic. This place resounds with sounds of the underground (maybe because it is underground) and seems like it plays its mainly R&B music louder than usual. As the largest club in town, it’s the done scene to secure one of its balconies and dance the night away.
